Social Media and Mindfulness

After having taken a class on consulting using the Gestalt (cycle of experience) approach, this article kind of hit home for me.  For those of you who are not familiar with the Gestalt cycle of experience, it’s all about awareness and being mindful of yourself and the environment around you.  This article is also about that, but with a social media spin.

How many times do you miss the experience of something or someplace because you were too caught up on Twitter or Facebook?  Or, like the article says, you watched a concert through your cell phone’s camera so that you could post it afterwards instead of actually watching the concert. This is what being mindful despite the creation of social media is all about.  It means ignoring those urges to check in on Facebook and post a status/tweet and simply enjoy your experience/environment while it is happening.  It’s about being in the present moment during the moment without the addition of a social media site to distract you.
