Starbucks is leading the way on Corporate America taking public positions on controversial issues that most companies avoid like the plague. Most recently, Starbucks supported the Marriage Equality Act in Washington State and the ability for individuals to carry weapons in stores where they are legally registered and able to do so. In her post, Felica Dorng, summarizes the position Starbucks takes and the resulting engagement and conversation that occurs on the Facebook page. The 29 + Million, yes MILLION, fans of Starbucks having differing and often venomously opposing views to one another and the position of Starbucks, which they welcome so long as the views/comments are not too aggressive, hostile or hateful. It will be interesting to see if other companies will begin to have more open policies on taking positions and encouraging debate on them.
